In 1614, a European explorer kidnapped twenty Wampanoag men from Patuxet (now Plymouth) and seven more from Nauset on Cape Cod to sell them as slaves in Spain. Only one is known to have returned home: Tisquantum, who came to be known as Squanto. “Who Will Teach My Son” is a video impact statement that was part of the first chapter of the traveling exhibit, “Our”Story: 400 Years of Wampanoag History. “Captured: 1614”, was introduced in 2017. This tragic and compelling backstory to the colonization of Plymouth has been long overlooked, and comes to life in the exhibit’s dramatic images and video impact statements. “Our”Story: 400 Years of Wampanoag History was conceptualized, researched, and produced by SmokeSygnals Marketing and Communications and The Indian Spiritual and Cultural Training Council Inc. The exhibit was part of Plymouth 400, Inc.’s Signature Programs and Events that took place through 2021. Peregrine White was the first child born to the Pilgrims in the New World. His parents, William and Susanna White, had boarded the Mayflower with their young son Resolved. Susanna gave birth to Peregrine before the end of November (Old Style calendar), 1620 while the Mayflower was anchored in Provincetown Harbor. He lived much of his life in Marshfield and died at the age of 83. Peregrine White’s cradle is on exhibit at Pilgrim Hall Museum. In 2021 Pilgrim Hall Museum and the Marshfield Historical Society presented a webinar on Peregrine White’s life, featuring Stephen C. O’Neill, author of the book, “The Life of Peregrine White: The First Englishman Born in New England.” You can watch this interesting presentation here: https://lnkd.in/etA4ttvW . . #peregrinewhite #pilgrims #plymouthcolony #mayflower #marshfieldma #17thcenturyhistory #americanhistory

Did you know that the Pilgrims regarded March 25th as the beginning of the new calendar year? You will sometimes see dates in January, February and March referred to by two years (such as 1622/23). The first year is the year as computed by the Pilgrims. The second year is the year as computed by the modern calendar. It’s known as "Old Style/New Style" dual system of dating. Some interesting facts about Plymouth Rock: 🪨 The first references to Plymouth Rock are found over 100 years after the actual landing of the Pilgrims. 🪨 The top (visible) 1/3 of Plymouth Rock weighs approximately 4 tons. The bottom portion (under the sand) weighs approximately 6 tons. 🪨 The Rock as it exists today is estimated to be only about 1/3 to 1/2 of its original size. 🪨 The top half has been dragged around town, broken, and chipped away at by 18th and 19th century souvenir hunters.
